Myth: Only females and especially teenaged girls have eating disorders. Eating disorders have reference to behavior like an obsession to be thin or even an emotional problem. You cannot simply say if an individual has an eating disorder just by looking at an individual's weight, size or even body shape. Myth: Bulimic individuals purge their food by vomiting. Not true. Some bulimics take laxatives, some exercise and some fast to get rid of calories. Myth: By following a specific diet and with dedication, an individual can remain thin. It must be remembered that being fat is more a hereditary problem and is not caused by an individual's lifestyle and they therefore cannot be as thin as they wish whatever the commitment. With a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine, some people can achieve or maintain a shapely form but for most people, however they try, it seems impossible to maintain that perfect figure. Myth: Any Eating Disorder is not life threatening. All eating disorders can be fatal if not treated in time and not treated properly as they can harm the entire body, especially the heart and the bones as the body will not get the necessary requirement of calcium and vitamins it requires for functioning properly. Individuals who suffer from Bulimia mostly die from cardiac arrest and ruptured esophagus. Cardiac arrest because the electrolytes goes out of balance and potassium levels are low and ruptured esophagus due to vomiting in excess. Death can be due also due to the fact they use laxatives to purge and also extreme exercise. Myth: Eating disorders are a sickness only for the mentally ill. It is not a mental disorder. It is simply an obsession in some people to maintain that ideal body especially if you are a gymnast or a dancer as these people have to have an attractive body. Myth: Complete recovery from an eating disorder is not possible. With the proper treatment, with support from your family members and a lot of hard work on the individual's part recovery is possible.
