Myths About Eating Disorders

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 598

Myth: Only females and especially teenaged girls have eating disorders.

Eating disorders more often begin during the teenage years and are especially more common in women.  However, they do occur in men too and they can occur at any age.

Myth: An individual cannot suffer from more than one eating disorder.

This is completely false.  It is common for an individual to suffer from more than one eating disorder at a time.

Myth: Compulsive eating or bingeing is not considered an eating disorder.

Compulsive eating or bingeing is considered very much an eating disorder.  It is rather a serious condition, as serious as bulimia or even anorexia.  An individual becomes a compulsive eater when he or she is having a problem and is trying to cope or even block out their feelings or problems.

Myth: Men who suffer from eating disorders tend to be gay.

This has nothing to do with a person getting or having an eating disorder.

Myth: Only overweight or underweight individuals suffer from eating disorders.

Eating disorders have reference to behavior like an obsession to be thin or even an emotional problem.  You cannot simply say if an individual has an eating disorder just by looking at an individual's weight, size or even body shape.

Myth: Bulimic individuals purge their food by vomiting.

Not true.  Some bulimics take laxatives, some exercise and some fast to get rid of calories.

Myth: By following a specific diet and with dedication, an individual can remain thin.

It must be remembered that being fat is more a hereditary problem and is not caused by an individual's lifestyle and they therefore cannot be as thin as they wish whatever the commitment.  With a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine, some people can achieve or maintain a shapely form but for most people, however they try, it seems impossible to maintain that perfect figure.

Myth: Any Eating Disorder is not life threatening.

All eating disorders can be fatal if not treated in time and not treated properly as they can harm the entire body, especially the heart and the bones as the body will not get the necessary requirement of calcium and vitamins it requires for functioning properly.  Individuals who suffer from Bulimia mostly die from cardiac arrest and ruptured esophagus.  Cardiac arrest because the electrolytes goes out of balance and potassium levels are low and ruptured esophagus due to vomiting in excess.  Death can be due also due to the fact they use laxatives to purge and also extreme exercise.

Myth: Eating disorders are a sickness only for the mentally ill.

It is not a mental disorder.  It is simply an obsession in some people to maintain that ideal body especially if you are a gymnast or a dancer as these people have to have an attractive body.

Myth: Complete recovery from an eating disorder is not possible.

With the proper treatment, with support from your family members and a lot of hard work on the individual's part recovery is possible.  It could take a long period of time though.
